AAUW honors volunteers at Pass the Gavel Luncheon

FALLBROOK – At a recent luncheon, officers, board members and volunteers were acknowledged for their dedication and many hours of service to making Fallbrook American Association of University Women (AAUW) a successful and effective organization. During the event, the club’s gavel was passed from current co-presidents Iris Bourque and Julie Norberg to next year’s co-presidents, Sheri Ludwig and Laurenn Barker.

An Italian buffet was served at the Hukilau Restaurant at the Fallbrook Golf Club. Dennis David sang and played keyboard while Barbara Ajello and Christine Assad led a sing-a-long. Certificates of appreciation and gifts were given to many of the volunteers from the 2009/2010 term as a new year begins in September.

AAUW is a service to the community and a social organization. Twenty-two members are AVID mentors to high school girls who wish to attend college. All of the fundraising from their annual garden tour to Mah Jong tournaments goes to scholarships. They also support Tech Trek, which is an annual week at science camp for seven eighth- grade girls. The camp is designed to encourage the girls to develop an interest in pursuing careers in fields predominantly held by men.

Women must have an Associates degree or better to be a member of AAUW. Anyone interested in learning more can contact membership chair, Diane Gill at (760) 414-1957.
