Golden Eagles win field hockey rematch against Fallbrook - Warriors follow league-opening loss with two wins

Fallbrook High School’s field hockey team opened Avocado East League play October 7 against San Pasqual in the first match between those two teams since the 2009 CIF Division I finals.

In last year’s CIF championship game, the Golden Eagles scored a goal midway through the first half to defeat Fallbrook by a 1-0 score. The October 7 game at San Pasqual saw the Golden Eagles score a second-half goal for a 1-0 victory.

The Warriors had a shot on goal late in the first half which went into the net but did so shortly after the halftime whistle. Waite feels that the game showed Fallbrook’s ability to compete with San Pasqual. “We have to, of course, adjust in a few areas,” Waite said.

Fallbrook’s October 12 home game against Escondido gave the Warriors some opportunity to work on plays. The Warriors led 4-0 at halftime and won the game by a 6-0 score. “We’re trying to really work on our passing,” said Waite.

Jamie Garcia scored the first two goals against Escondido with Lauren Hughey recording assists on both. The third goal was scored by Sydney Richelieu with assists by Sarah Lopez and Hughey. Hughey scored the final first-half goal while Ali Copeland assisted. Hughey also opened the second-half scoring after taking a pass from Molly Throop, and Lopez’s unassisted goal closed out the scoring.

Fallbrook goalies Jahna Jordan and Drea Gomez did not need to make any saves as the defense led by Katie Callahan, Blanca Barrientos, Erin Yankie, Bri Rothert, and Jackie Eskue kept the Cougars without a shot on goal.

Fallbrook’s defense also prevented Mission Hills from taking a shot during the Warriors’ 3-0 home win October 14. All three Fallbrook goals against the Grizzlies were scored in the first half. Lopez opened the scoring with an assist from Garcia, Copeland converted a pass from Lizzy Hutzler for the second goal, and Throop had a successful shot after assists from Richelieu and Hughey.

The wins over Escondido and Mission Hills gave Fallbrook a 2-1 Avocado League East record along with a 14-4 overall mark.
