Fallbrook High School’s field hockey team reached the CIF Division I semifinals before a 5-0 loss November 18 at Scripps Ranch ended the Warriors’ season.
The Warriors’ 20-7 final record also included a November 16 home playoff win against Vista. Fallbrook had the fourth seed in the CIF Division I playoffs and was given a first-round bye.
The only goal in Fallbrook’s 1-0 victory over Vista was scored in overtime by Jamie Garcia on a corner play with an assist from Ali Copeland. “Hard-fought game,” said Fallbrook coach Kathy Waite. “We had balance both ways.”
Fallbrook goalie Jahna Jordan recorded the shutout with the help of defenders Blanca Barrientos, Katie Callahan, Jackie Eskue, and Shelby Sellers.
“They were awesome,” Waite said.
“It was more of a midfield game,” Waite said. “Vista’s defense was pretty good.”
Fallbrook had 14 corner plays during the game, and the overtime goal was the only corner play the Warriors converted into a score.
“She had a great angle on the goal,” Waite said of Garcia’s shot.
Scripps Ranch avenged a 3-1 non-league loss to Fallbrook earlier in the season.
“They came out very strong and stayed strong the entire game,” Waite said.
Fallbrook had also defeated the Falcons during a scrimmage. Scripps Ranch scored the first three goals before Fallbrook overcame that deficit for a 4-3 win. During the season, Scripps Ranch led San Pasqual by a 2-0 margin before the Golden Eagles
came back for a 3-2 victory.
“She was not going to let that happen again,” Waite said of Scripps Ranch coach Jane Morrill.
The Falcons’ goal total in the playoff match exceeded that of the two other games against Fallbrook combined, while the shutout of the Warriors was the only one for Scripps Ranch in 2010. “They marked us better and shut down our offense,” Waite said.
