Eight members of Fallbrook High School’s field hockey team earned all-league honors for the 2010 season.
The Avocado East League coaches selected senior forward Lauren Hughey, senior goalkeeper Jahna Jordan, and junior midfielder Jamie Garcia to the first team. Senior defender Shelby Sellers and junior forward Sydney Richelieu received second-team recognition. Honorable mention distinction was conferred upon senior defender Blanca Barrientos, senior midfielder Ali Copeland, and senior forward Sarah Lopez.
“I was pleased,” Fallbrook coach Kathy Waite said having eight players receive all-league recognition.
Fallbrook placed second in the league standings with a 7-3 record in Avocado East League competition. The Warriors had an overall season record of 20-7, including a CIF quarterfinal playoff win over Vista and a semifinal playoff loss against Scripps Ranch.
Hughey led the team with 27 goals.
“That tells you how good a shooter she was,” Waite said about Hughey, who also had 26 assists. “She had lots of quality passing to either right or left side. She is a real team player on the field. I think everyone stepped up because of her strong skills.”
Garcia had 10 goals and 16 assists.
“She did awesome,” Waite said.
Waite noted that Hughey likely wouldn’t have had such impressive statistics were it not for Garcia’s teamwork.
“She stepped up,” Waite said of Garcia.
Jordan’s statistics are diluted since she often yielded the nets to Drea Gomez, but the team had a total of 15 shutouts. Jordan faced 114 shots on goal and had 100 saves, for a .877 save percentage.
“She’s done all her homework,” Waite said of Jordan. “Very positive team captain.”
Waite notes that varsity players who didn’t receive all-league distinction are expected to join Garcia and Richelieu on the 2011 squad.
“We’re going to have a very good core of girls next year,” Waite said.
