CAMP PENDLETON - A siren at Camp Pendleton that went off inadvertently about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19 could be heard for miles around, but there was no emergency.
Marine Sgt. D.V. Rodela said the siren, part of a base notification system, went off for about five minutes, but apparently some residents as far away as southern Orange County could hear it.
''It was a malfunction,'' Rodela said.
Gil Alexander of Southern California Edison made a few phone calls to make sure the new media knew there was no emergency at Edison's San Onofre nuclear power plant, which has its own system of sirens....
