A Fallbrook couple died instantly when the vehicle they were traveling in on South Mission Road veered off the roadway and struck a tree. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 14 where Overland Trail intersects with South Mission, just south of Fallbrook High School.
Fatally injured were Jason Nafus, 39, and his wife, Shawna (Latham-Greene) Nafus, 27, of Fallbrook, who had been married less than 10 months. Jason was a graduate of Millard High School in Fillmore, Utah, and Shawna was a graduate of Fallbrook High School.
Based on the investigation at the scene of the accident, emergency responders said it appeared that the vehicle driven by Jason Nafus, a 1995 Nissan Altima, was traveling over 90 miles per hour at the time of impact.
CHP officers said it is remains unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision until the investigation is complete.
The Nafus’ family members are making arrangements to transport the couple’s bodies to Utah for burial.
