Members of the Fallbrook Chamber Orchestra, along with family and friends, gathered in Fallbrook’s Village Square on Wednesday, Jan. 19 to listen to the orchestra’s leader, Elizabeth Monacelli, and their guest artist from Finland, Jari Suomalainen, play works by Bach and Vivaldi on their violins.
The two musicians began their weekly 11 a.m. concerts on Jan. 12 and plan to continue them through the rest of Suomalainen’s three month visit with his girlfriend who lives here. He is helping to coach the orchestra while he is here and will return to Finland at the end of March when his visa expires.
Everyone is welcome to come and listen to the violinists, and bring their lunch with them if they wish. To promote classical music, Monacelli hopes to eventually hold the free concerts on the weekends so more people can attend them as she wants to “give more culture to Fallbrook… and add another dimension to our arts town,” she said. Monacelli also plans on inviting local artists to display their paintings during the concerts for an added cultural attraction.
Monacelli took over leadership of the chamber orchestra, founded by Barbara Martin, in June 2010 when there were eight members. Now there are 30 members ranging in age from five to 72. The group is affiliated with the Fallbrook Chorale, performing in concert with that group twice a year. Their next joint event will be in June at the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts.
The Fallbrook Chamber Orchestra also performs at area senior facilities and other places; their schedule includes an Easter concert in April at Regency Fallbrook.
Any local musicians who would like to join them are welcome to come to the practice sessions held on Mondays from 7 t0 8:30 p.m. at Community Baptist Church, 731 S. Stage Coach Lane. Monacelli would particularly like to have more woodwinds and string players, particularly violas and cellos.
