Manufacturing an underclass

What is the great American idea, our unique contribution to the development of mankind? Although some seem to feel it’s that taxes are optional, I think that it’s actually the revolution of replacing a system of monarchy/aristocracy with a meritocracy; that is people rise by their work and talents rather than by birthright.
