35 dive at Fallbrook meet, Matthews wins boys 6-dive

The Fallbrook Early Season Invitational diving meet held March 26 at the Fallbrook High School pool drew a total of 35 divers.

“Went well,” said organizer Sean Redmond, who also coaches the boys and girls divers at Fallbrook High School.

The invitational consisted of boys six-dive, boys 11-dive, girls six-dive, and girls 11-dive competitions. The winner of the boys six-dive event was Fallbrook sophomore Ben Matthews, who had a score of 123.95 points.

Three Fallbrook sophomores competed in the boys six-dive event. Nathan Benner placed second with a score of 120.25 points, and Kellan Costantino accumulated 85.55 points to take fourth place.

Kelly Wilkinson of Vista High School won the girls six-dive competition with a score of 174.05 points. Fallbrook freshman Diana Riddle placed third after totaling 146.10 points. Sophomore Hannah Bergholz was seventh after scoring 122.00 points.

“I was really impressed with Hannah,” Redmond said.

Bergholz dove in the Warriors’ dual meet against Valley Center the day before the diving invitational and hit her head on the diving board. “On that same dive she hit her head on, she did very well with it,” Redmond said of Bergholz’s performance at the invitational.

Haley Francois of Rancho Bernardo High School won the girls 11-dive event with 430.25 points. The only Fallbrook competitor in that event was freshman Haylee Johnson, whose score of 319.00 placed fourth and also gave her an automatic 11-dive score for the CIF meet.

The top boys 11-dive score was 310.95 points, achieved by Cameron Cox of Rancho Bernardo. Fallbrook’s only participant in that event, freshman Ben Lanari, placed fifth with 237.15 points in his second diving event. “That was good experience for him,” Redmond said.

“We are a young team, very young team,” Redmond said. “I was very proud of our divers. I thought they did great.”

Fallbrook High School’s pool will also host a diving invitational on April 16.
