Two Warrior gymnasts post qualifying scores

Fallbrook High School’s gymnastics team had four varsity competitors when the Warriors opened their season March 16 at home against Rancho Bernardo, which is not enough to obtain a full score, so co-coaches Kayla Alonso and Janeva Sandoval knew beforehand that Rancho Bernardo was going to win the meet. The coaches were pleased after the meet when two of Fallbrook’s four gymnasts posted qualifying scores for the CIF meet.

“It went well,” Sandoval said.

Last year Bryanna Cusimano was Fallbrook’s optional gymnast. This year she is healing from an injury and attended the meet but likely will not participate during the season.

“It’s a bummer. It’s her senior year, too,” Alonso said. “She wants to do it so bad.”

Cusimano’s inactivity makes junior Krystal Schmid the only returning Warrior gymnast from 2010. In order to qualify for the CIF meet, a compulsory gymnast must score at least 35 points in the all-around three times, and a compulsory gymnast who scores at least nine points in any event three times qualifies for the CIF meet in that event. Schmid exceeded 35 all-around points against Rancho Bernardo while also scoring at least a 9.0 on the floor and the bars.

Sarah Engebretson also earned her first score of at least 35 all-around points while posting initial qualifying scores on the beam, floor, and vault.

Kalani Aguigui competed as Fallbrook’s optional gymnast.

“She’s going to do great,” Alonso said. “We’re really excited to have her on the team.”

The fourth varsity gymnast March 16 was Justina DiBacco.

“The girls are going to do great,” Alonso said. “I think we’re going to have a really good season.”
