Granite Construction states that the public will not see, hear or feel the proposed Liberty Quarry. Why then have they requested a “noise ordinance exception” from Riverside County for the quarry?
In the recently released Final Environmental Impact Report for the quarry, Granite is requesting to operate “from 4 a.m. to 12 a.m. (midnight), six days per week, 52 weeks per year.” Additionally, the EIR states: “Maintenance would occur on a continual basis, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year.” Further, the FEIR states: “The quarry would periodically ship materials 24 hours per day, up to seven days per week for limited periods.” There will also be up to 10 mining blasts per week. We would have brightly lit activity and continual noise for 50-75 years from this quarry and its associated industries.
The proposed mining site is also not zoned for mining. Granite has applied for a Change of Zone for 110 acres of the total 414 acre site from Rural Residential (R-R) to Mineral Resources and Related Manufacturing (M-R-A) to accommodate Liberty Quarry.
If Liberty Quarry is approved, real estate values will go down, insurance rates will go up, and the people, economy, wildlife, ecology and environment will suffer. No one will win but Granite Construction.
