FALLBROOK – Classical music fans won’t want to miss the final concert of Fallbrook Music Society’s 2011-2011 season as it’s going to be an extraordinary performance. On Sunday, May 22, Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 2 will be performed by the full orchestra from Redlands Symphony and a chorus of over 100 singers, who will join the orchestra for the powerful final movement.
Known as “The Resurrection,” Symphony No. 2 was written by Austrian-born Gustav Mahler between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. One of the leading composers and conductors of his generation, this composition was one of Mahler’s most popular and successful works, and the first major work that marked his lifelong view of the meaning of personal resurrection from life’s difficulties.
Brenda Montiel, president of Fallbrook Music Society said, “This is a rare opportunity for audience members to see and hear one of the most dramatic and emotional works in the classical repertoire. It is rare that works of this size, nature and complexity are ever performed outside major cities, and we are thrilled to present this concert in Fallbrook.”
Dr. Montiel, who is also a classical music authority, will present a free “Music Insights” lecture about this concert’s music on Saturday, May 14 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Fallbrook Library. Reservations for the lecture are suggested, and are available by calling the Music Society.
The concert will be held at 3 p.m. in the Bob Burton Center for the Performing Arts, 2400 S. Stage Coach Lane. There will be a conductor’s preview at 2:30 p.m., which is open to all ticket holders. Tickets are $38 adult, $10 for full-time students with I.D., and can be purchased through Fallbrook Music Society at (760) 451-8644 or
