Gregory Canyon landfill may be threatened by passage of Senate Bill 833

SACRAMENTO – Last week, the California Senate overwhelming passed 32-3 legislation that could block construction of the proposed Gregory Canyon landfill near Pala.

The bill, introduced by Democratic Senator Juan Vargas from San Diego, specifically prohibits the construction or operation of a solid waste landfill in San Diego county if that landfill is within 1,000 feet of the San Luis Rey River or an aquifer that is hydrologically connected to that river and is within 1,000 feet of a site that is considered sacred by American Indians.
