Speedsters break two records at Dornon Games

FALLBROOK – On June 4, two new records were set by five runners at the 40th annual Dornon Games. Four boys broke a record originally set more than 30 years ago. The fifth grade boys from Mary Fay Pendleton ran the 400 meter relay with a time of 59.88, shaving 13 seconds off the previous 1981 record.

Troy Winston, from Independent Schools, set a new record in the sixth grade boys 200 meter run, with a time of 27.25, breaking the 2008 record of 27.6. A third meet record was broken in the fifth grade girls’ standing long jump as Alexa Sykes from William H. Frazier School jumped 86”, one inch farther than the old record of 85” set in 1990.

The coveted Marciano Gonzales Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy was awarded to the Mary Fay Pendleton team.

Over 500 fourth through sixth graders from La Paloma, Live Oak, Fallbrook Street, William H. Frazier, Mary Fay Pendleton, San Onofre, Bonsall, Iowa Street and Zion Lutheran schools competed in the track and field events.

Again this year, there was strong community support to see that the games ran smoothly. Both National Charity League (NCL) and Fallbrook Village Rotary have volunteered their help at the games for over 20 years. Each year, NCL and Ticktockers donate their time to run concessions, which pay for the ribbons and team awards.

Fallbrook Village Rotary runs the tug-of-war, with 16 tugs for six different competitions. Kiwanis of Fallbrook also worked events while many of the volunteers were members of Fallbrook High School’s track and field team, AVID, and Key Club.
