Schmid fifth in compulsory all-around, Engebretson third on bars

Fallbrook High School junior Krystal Schmid finished fifth in the compulsory all-around competition at the CIF gymnastics meet May 20 at West Hills High School, and Warrior freshman Sarah Engebretson placed third in the compulsory vault event.

“I felt like the girls did really well,” said co-coach Janeva Sandoval.

All four active members of the Warrior varsity team qualified for the CIF meet, although optional gymnast Kalani Aguigui was unable to attend. Schmid and Engebretson qualified for the all-around competition while freshman Justina DiBacco qualified for the floor routine. In order to qualify for the CIF meet, a compulsory gymnast must score at least 35 points in the all-around three times during the season, and a compulsory gymnast who scores at least nine points in any event three times qualifies for the CIF meet in that event.

“The girls made me really proud and did really well,” said co-coach Kayla Alonso.

A total of 37 gymnastics competed in all four compulsory events. Schmid had an all-around score of 36.875 points which consisted of a sixth-place floor routine score of 9.275, a seventh-place score of 9.35 on the bars, an 11th-place score of 9.25 on the vault, and a score of 9.0 on the beam which tied for 21st place.

“She did really well,” Alonso said.

Engebretson’s third-place vault score was 9.55 points. Her all-around score of 36.475 took eleventh place; she scored 9.15 points on the floor exercise to place tenth, took 19th place on the bars with 8.9 points, and had a 29th-place score of 8.875 on the beam.

“She has a lot of potential,” Alonso said. “I think she’s going to have a really good gymnastics career.”

DiBacco’s score of 9.05 points shared 16th place for the floor routine.

“I’m just really proud of all their hard work,” Alonso said.
