Woman to be sentenced today for elder abuse against her grandma

MURRIETA - A woman who broke into her elderly grandmother's Hemet home and beat her with a cane is scheduled to be sentenced today.

April Courtney, 36, pleaded guilty in February to burglary and elder abuse in the Sept. 3, 2008, attack on her then-94-year-old grandmother, Lydia.

Courtney, who is free on bail, was set to go on trial for the charges, as well as an allegation of attempted murder and inflicting great bodily injury on a person over 70 years old, when a plea deal was struck with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.
