The new $150 per structure wildfire protection fee signed into law July 8 by Governor Jerry Brown may be a way for the state to levy a charge against rural homeowners to help cover costs of Cal Fire’s operation, so that amount of money previously provided to the agency through state coffers can be used for other purposes. The fee was proposed in Assembly Bill 29, authored by Assembly member Bob Blumenfield (D) of the 40th District and was made effective with the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
