Fallbrook High School’s gymnastics team held its post-season award banquet June 11 at the Temecula home of co-coach Kayla Alonso.
“It was a really fun time,” Alonso said. “We just took some time to recognize our awarded gymnasts.”
In addition to the awards, the banquet included lunch catered by Panda Express, and the team photograph was also taken that afternoon.
The varsity Most Valuable Player award was presented to freshman Sarah Engebretson. “Sarah was one of the best gymnasts I think Fallbrook has ever had. She had an amazing season. She was very consistent,” Alonso said. “She got better and better every meet.”
Engebretson placed third in the compulsory vault event at the CIF meet May 20 with a score of 9.55 points; she scored 9.15 points on the floor exercise to place 10th, and her compulsory all-around score of 36.475 gave her 11th place (she also placed 19th on the bars and 29th on the beam). “She works really hard and she’s really talented,” Alonso said. “We’re just really blessed to have her.”
Courtney Arnold was the junior varsity Most Valuable Player recipient. The other awards were combined for varsity and junior varsity gymnasts and were both won by JV competitors; Valerie Perez received Most Improved recognition while Alessa McNatt took home the Best Attendance award.
The banquet also recognized the team captains; Engebretson and junior Krystal Schmid were the varsity captains while Perez and Kayla Reddingius captained the junior varsity team. “We just took a moment to thank them,” Alonso said.
“Just really proud of all of our girls. They worked really hard and we saw a lot of improvement,” Alonso said.
