FALLBROOK “ David Heid grew up in Kirkland, Wash. and Delynn Heid grew up in Glendora, Calif. They met each other at Brigham Young University (BYU), in Provo, Utah after David had returned from a two-year mission to Zimbabwe, Africa. David was studying physical education and English. He was also playing baseball for BYU. Delynn was studying history. They fell in love and were married. After Delynn finished her education, she supported David through his.
After David graduated, they moved to Fallbrook and David began a long distinguished career at Fallbrook High School in 1976. He started coaching football and baseball as well as teaching English. He taught at Fallbrook High for 33 years. He is best known for his winning baseball teams. He modestly said, œWe had more than our share of winning teams.
Delynn stayed home to raise their three children, Danny, Devin and Dana. In 1989, she started her teaching career at Temecula Valley High School. She taught AP Art and AP English. She taught there for 21 years before retiring. After they retired David said, œThe thing we will both miss is the interaction with the kids.
They are now going on an 18-month mission together to Ghana, West Africa. They will once again be teaching young adults. Delynn said of their decision to go, œWe feel a great peace about our decision and our calling. We are so anxious to meet our new best friends.
They will be teaching skills in learning English and career building. This will be part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' humanitarian program called œPerpetual Education Fund (PEF). David said, œThis is a program of hope where young people can change their lives financially. Sometimes recipients can improve their income tenfold. Volunteers work to help young adults in African countries or other under-developed nations get scholarship funds for career planning.
A large farewell party was held on Sept.11 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Fallbrook. Many people from the church, Fallbrook High School, and the communities of Fallbrook and Temecula came to wish the Heids farewell.
David said, œOur whole lives we have nurtured kids, and that is what we will be doing in Africa.
David and Delynn Heid left for Ghana on Sept. 20.
