Library to exhibit pupils' art on water conservation

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Library is exhibiting the colorful artwork of 13 Fallbrook fourth-graders’ best and brightest water-conservation posters. This is only the third art display to be showcased on the library’s coveted walls in the children’s section.

Students from schools all over North County put pens and crayons to paper to color pictures representing the contest theme “Water Is Life.” Of the thousands of posters colored countywide, Fallbrook pupils scored three of the top spots in the final product, the 2012 “Water Is Life” calendar.

Hundreds of students in Fallbrook Public Utility District area classrooms entered the contest. FPUD’s top three are Anna Anderson, Vivian VonTersch and Brandon Rodriguez.

FPUD judges chose 13 entries and recognized the young artists at the May board of directors meeting. All 13 won special prizes; the top three winning a T-shirt with their winning artwork printed on it.

Fallbrook’s other 10 winning artists are Imogen Isaac, Kendra Donoghue, Hannah Bradley, Mustafa Torabi, Jagger Berreth, Cara Burcham, Joey Muro, Luke Conley, Catherine Carlisle and Y’Lan Milton.

The annual contest is open only to North County fourth-graders and is put into motion by FPUD and 12 other water agencies. The agencies collaborate to find the most eye-catching images illustrating the need for saving water in semi-arid San Diego County.

Fourth-graders are selected for the contest because they have studied water and can vividly depict the need for conservation. Their classrooms were visited by FPUD spokeswoman Noelle Denke, who tested their knowledge with a game of water bingo. She talked about water conservation and then invited pupils to participate in the contest.

Posters were judged on best expression of theme, creativity and artistic skill. The 2012 calendar will be ready this month; free copies will be available in the district office.
