Fallbrook Senior Service Club nets Wal-Mart grant

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Senior Citizens Center recently received a $1,000 food services grant from the Wal-Mart store in Oceanside.

The grant is part of a renewed push by the 37-year-old nonprofit organization to expand and diversify its revenue sources in order to support the quality of life of area seniors. Additional grant applications are now being prepared or submitted to a range of corporations, foundations and other potential donors.

“The Fallbrook Senior Center thanks Wal-Mart for its support and hopes that this new partnership continues well into the future,” said Margaret Singleton, a group board member who prepared the grant application. “Many Fallbrook seniors and other local residents shop at the Oceanside Wal-Mart, and it is encouraging that store leaders support such a vital community need as senior nutrition.”

The center is located at 399 Heald Lane in Fallbrook. The club’s approximately 720 members each pay $15 a year for membership. Club membership is open to residents of Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow who are age 55 or above. The club is looking for new members. The nonprofit club, which was established in 1974, operates a popular center where activities, classes, games and food distribution programs are offered. A thrift shop at the center provides some of the club’s operating funds.

The club is also the designated agency that provides low-cost senior meals in the area. About 10,050 lunches are served each year on a five-day a week basis at a nearby San Diego County community center. Another 14,720 lunches are delivered each year to homebound seniors. More information about the center and its meals, activities and programs is available by calling (760) 728-4498.
