Fallbrook falls to the Carlsbad Lancers, 31-17

On Friday, October 7, the Fallbrook varsity football team hosted the Carlsbad Lancers. The Warriors (1-4) looked to be in prime condition to snap the Lancers’ three-game winning streak, but instead, Carlsbad used a strong second half to secure a victory. Fallbrook fell, 31-17.

On the first offensive play of the game, Warrior quarterback Micah Marroquin was tackled in the backfield. The horse collar tackle gave Fallbrook fifteen yards and an injured signal caller. Christopher Fuetterer stepped in to lead the offense down to the Lancers’ two-yard line. However, a failed fourth down conversion attempt gave Carlsbad the football.

The Lancers’ initial possession was short-lived as a first down pass play resulted in a fumble, giving the Warriors new life and excellent field position. Carlsbad’s defense remained stingy and forced Fallbrook to settle for a field goal.

The second quarter was higher scoring than the first as a Lancer drive ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Michael Ecija. The Warriors responded with a Fuetterer touchdown run from three yards out of the end zone. Carlsbad’s Shawn Cameron immediately answered on the ensuing possession with an 85-yard run to give his team a 14-10 lead. A Lancer field goal with a minute left in the period provided the visiting team a seven-point margin at halftime.

A scoreless third quarter led to the decisive fourth. Shawn Cameron simply took the game into his own hands as he scored twice on a one-yard plunge and a 64-yard dash in the final period to seal a Carlsbad victory. Fallbrook managed to score with 24 seconds remaining in regulation time when Dorian Larkin sprinted down the sideline for a 68-yard score. However, the Lancers came out on top, 31-17.

“We prepared for a lot of things, and when we came out onto the field, we didn’t execute what we prepared for,” said a frustrated Fuetterer.

Head coach Joe Silvey added, “[The Lancers] are awfully good, and it’s very clear they’re getting better each week.”

With good league play, the Warriors may still reach the CIF playoffs. Silvey remains hopeful of his team’s chances.
