State Route 86 open after big rig collapses bridge

COACHELLA - A tractor-trailer took out an under-construction overpass on State Route 86 early this morning, resulting in closure of the highway for much of the day. Around 12:30 a.m., a southbound truck hit the Airport Boulevard bridge, causing its collapse. Caltrans' Shelli Lombardo said the driver of the truck, which was labeled oversize, did not take a designated detour for unknown reasons, and the vehicle did not clear the bridge.
