Arts and Crafts Hobby Shop helps families create memories

There is a unique, hidden gem located on Camp Pendleton that offers creative opportunities for base residents to explore their artistic talents.

The Arts and Crafts Hobby Shop, located on Mainside, Bldg. 13113, is an inexpensive place for patrons to enjoy artistic hobbies such as woodworking, cake decorating, ceramics, sewing, pottery, guitar lessons and many other activities.

“[Creating] produces satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment that is hard to match with any other pastime,” according to the hobby shop’s official website. “The idea of pursuing a creative hobby can be easily lost if you live in the barracks or are on a tight budget, so the base hobby shop was created over 50 years ago aboard Camp Pendleton to bring the idea of ‘creating’ to our Military and their families.”

The hobby shop has grown into a unique facility catering to military members, families and children of all ages. A large variety of classes are offered at beginner levels so that everyone can participate, regardless of their skill level.

“Creativity is starting to dwindle with the new era of technology available to everyone,” said Brittni Young, assistant manager, Arts and Crafts Hobby Shop. “We offer a wide range of classes so that everyone can get in touch with their creative side and show their true potential.”

Instructors lead classes that offer one-on-one instruction and hands-on activities to make sure the participants get a good grasp on their activities. The facility is also open Wednesday through Friday, 12 to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for those who wish to explore their creative talents on their own.

“I love coming here to paint ceramics for my kids,” said Joyanne Tutt, a Marine spouse and frequent visitor of the shop. “It’s a fun and cheap way to create lifelong memories.”

The shop is not just a place for people to hone their crafts or learn a new hobby, according to the website. It provides patrons with a sense of creativity and satisfaction.
