Warrior wrestlers win four matches in meet at LCC

Fallbrook High School’s wrestling team lost its dual meet opener December 7 at La Costa Canyon by a 51-19 score, but the results were encouraging for Fallbrook head coach Greg Wagaman.

“You wouldn’t know it by the score, but we wrestled a really good match,” Wagaman said.

The team scores are derived from the scores of each of the 14 matches. The maximum number of points for each match is six, which is awarded for a pin or for a forfeit. Because Fallbrook only had twelve varsity wrestlers, twelve points were forfeited to the Mavericks.

Fallbrook won four of the twelve contested matches.

“The matches we won we beat some really big kids,” Wagaman said.

Wagaman noted that most of Fallbrook’s wrestlers competed in a higher weight class (a wrestler may grapple one division higher than his weight class but not in a lighter class). Fallbrook’s twelve wrestlers included two seniors who are in their first year of wrestling.

“We’re at the point now where we’re wrestling pretty tough,” Wagaman said.
