Man Suspected of Beating, Holding Girlfriend Captive

SAN JACINTO - A man suspected of holding his girlfriend in his San Jacinto home and beating her repeatedly was behind bars today.

Sonny Joseph Mazon, 24, was arrested late Wednesday night and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, false imprisonment and making terrorist threats. He's being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

According to Riverside County sheriff's officials, deputies were called to Mazon's townhouse at 1547 Willowcreek Loop around 8 p.m. Wednesday to investigate reports of spousal abuse.

When deputies arrived, they discovered a 47-year-old woman with serious physical injuries, which she alleged her boyfriend, Mazon, had inflicted while holding her captive, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, according to the sheriff's department.

Mazon was questioned and booked into the county jail.
