FALLBROOK – Potter Jr. High became a wonderland on Friday, Jan. 20 with classrooms turning into fun activity centers and fields coming alive, full of outdoor activities.
As part of its Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program, Potter is implementing a new program called PRIDE Time, (Personal Responsibility in Developing Excellence). This PRIDE Time will be connected to the students’ academic success and good behavior.
All students at the school participated in this first PRIDE Time so that they know what ‘they would be missing’ if they have poor behavior or miss turning in work. Teachers signed up to teach an activity that not only would reward the students, but would be fun for themselves as well. It’s a valuable thing to be able to connect with students through a different, casual and fun interaction, building positive relationships.
Students could choose from a variety of offerings including crocheting, origami, backgammon, board games, ping pong, flag football, learning about animals, listening to or playing music, learning “How to Be a DJ,” dancing to “Thriller,” and how to do makeup and nails.
The Potter PTA supported the program by donating games, yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and money for supplies. Anyone interested in becoming involved and doing an activity that would interest junior high age students (makeup/nails, sports, animals, etc.), are welcome to come for a PRIDE Time as a guest teacher.
A second PRIDE Time is already being planned for March. If anyone has any supplies or donations that would support a good junior high activity, including knitting needles, crochet hooks and yarn, they can contact Katy Tobler at [email protected], or (760) 731-4151.
