My wonderful wife of 17 years, Samantha, never forgets that although I have been on planet Earth for almost 53 years, I’m still just a two-year-old at heart. And she knows quite well that the way to my heart is not through my stomach.
The way to my heart is with furry little four-legged puppies. Likewise, I know the way to my wife’s heart. Although she does love our dogs very, very much, nothing seems to make her feel more special than jewelry, flowers, and a nice dinner with wine. To say the least, she certainly well deserves.
Throughout our respective careers, we have both seen a good bit of the world. Even though there are plenty of places we would both like to see, we both cherish being at home and spending time with the dogs.
Samantha continues to work very hard and as usual, my work takes me far from home. So when we are together, it’s always all the holidays wrapped into a few short days together.
One day a little over a year ago, one of our Labrador Retrievers, Maggie showed signs of being in extreme distress. So, I loaded her up in the truck and off we went to the emergency veterinarian hospital and had her attended to. After a period of time, lots of tests, and monitoring, it was discovered that Maggie had a bad heart. This wasn’t just bad news, but really bad news. I had just ripped up the carpeting in the house and Samantha was eager to get a new center island with granite counter tops, back splash and new flooring. It was going to be a significant investment in our home.
It was finally determined that for Maggie to survive she would need to have a pacemaker installed. I didn’t even blink; I told the doctor to get things moving and then turned to my wife and said, “The kitchen and flooring are going to have to wait.” Samantha was already rubbing my shoulders to soothe me, then looked me in the eye and said, “I know, its okay.”
I was gone when the operation took place and when it was time, Samantha picked her up. Maggie was never so happy to be home. Today, she is doing fine and has no exercise restrictions. She runs and swims with our two other Labs, plays and wrestles with them too.
So, to my wife, Samantha, my Valentine, “I love you like no other man can understand.”
In case anyone is wondering, Samantha finally got a center island in the kitchen, but the flooring? Well, Christmas is coming.
