FHS students compete in first ever Capitol Hill Stock Market Game

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook High School is fielding 10 investment teams made up of 32 economics students to compete in the first ever Capitol Hill Stock Market Game.

It is expected that over 4000 teams will participate in the Capitol Hill Game representing the 435 congressional districts across the US.

The Fallbrook High School teams will be competing on behalf of Representative Darrell Issa – (R) CA-49

“The competition is going to be as tough as it can possibly be,” said Dave Evans, economics teacher at Fallbrook High School. “The best of the best nationwide are going head-to-head. Whatever the outcome, it will be a great learning experience for all.”

The students qualified because Evans is the number one advisor in the San Diego region in the year-long Stock Market Game which concludes April 27. Evans selected his 10 highest performing teams among the 36 he advises in the Stock Market Game.

The Stock Market Game gives students the opportunity to experience the stock market in real time. Each collaborative team is given $100,000 to invest. Initial investment decisions are made after the students research stocks and mutual funds and decide which ones to invest their capital in.

All buy and sell transactions are made online at the Stock Market Game web site in real time. If the teams so choose, they can sell and reinvest capital at any time during the game, whether to stem losses or to capture profits. Performance is measured against the performance of the Standard and Poor’s 500 index from Feb. 6, 2012 through May 11, 2012. The top three teams representing three different high schools will win a trip to Washington DC. The travel dates for the trip are June 19 to 21.

“It is a great credit to these students for giving forth the effort necessary to be successful investors and qualifying for the Capitol Hill Stock Market Game because of their performance,” said Evans. “We at Fallbrook High congratulate them and wish them well against what will be best possible competition at the high school level nationwide!”
