SAN DIEGO - Firefighters throughout San Diego County will descend on various street corners during this morning's commute for the Burn Institute's 13th annual ''Give Burns the Boot'' fundraiser.
Firefighters from a record 44 stations will use work boots to collect donations from motorists stuck in traffic at nearly 100 intersections, according to a Burn Institute statement.
Motorists have been known to give anywhere from loose change rattling around their vehicles to $100 bills, organizers said, noting that nearly $210,000 was collected last year for burn prevention programs and services. Those programs include one that sends burn-injured children to ''Camp Beyond the Scars.''
New to this year's event is a texting component, which enables motorists to donate $5 by texting ''BURN'' to 20222. The one-time donation will appear on the donor's next mobile bill.
