FALLBROOK – Over 500 people participated in the Seventh Annual Fallbrook A Leer/Family Reading Literacy Event and Day of Service held March 31 to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez, the late civil rights and labor leader. In addition, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service was recognized as its mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteerism. Over 1,000 new and donated books were distributed at this year’s event.
The event, held at the Maie Ellis auditorium, fosters reading as a family pursuit and was co-chaired by founder Leticia Maldonado Stamos and Maria Gomez. Community service was demonstrated by educators, guest readers, custodial staff and volunteers who took a weekend day to serve the community. School administrators and classroom teachers were integral in promoting and facilitating the venue for this anticipated community event.
Countless adult and student volunteers, including the businesses community, contributed to a successful, fun-filled and educational event. Many of the student volunteers participated with their families when this event was created seven years ago. Now these same student volunteers are looking forward to going to college and universities.
Fallbrook A Leer/Reading Family Literacy Day was awarded a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, Cesar Chavez Foundation. This competitive award recognizes the value in the national scene of community service on the strength and commitment by educators, students, and community volunteers.
Students also participated in a contest by writing about “The Legacy of Cesar Chavez and Dr. Martin Luther King: The Importance of Non-Violence and Community Service” and read parts of their essays that morning.
The winners of the essay contest were: sixth grade - Jennifer Vizzuett, Live Oak Elementary School; seventh grade - Antonia Rojas, Potter Jr. High School; and eighth grade - Mirna Marcial, Potter Jr. High School.
