Possible DUI related vehicle crash with sheriff's deputy in Coachella

COACHELLA - A 23-year-old man was in custody today on suspicion of going through a red light in Coachella while driving drunk, striking a sheriff's patrol car, injuring a deputy, then running away.

Cornelio Tapia of Coachella was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers and Riverside County sheriff's deputies around 11:10 a.m. Wednesday following a traffic stop at the intersection of Avenue 50 and Harrison Street.

Authorities had been keeping Tapia under surveillance since after the crash involving the squad car, said Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. John Hignight.
