MURRIETA - With her attorney seeking more time to review the case, arraignment was postponed today for a Hemet High School teacher accused of having sex with one of her male students.
Janel Pearl Ramirez, 32, could face 20 years in prison if convicted of unlawful intercourse with a minor and two counts of oral copulation of a child under 18 years old.
Ramirez appeared with her attorney, Virginia Blumenthal, before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Elaine Johnson, who rescheduled the arraignment to May 3 after Blumenthal requested additional time to confer with her client.
Ramirez remains free on $100,000 bail. She was arrested March 1 for allegedly performing sex acts on her 17-year-old teacher's aide. Sheriff's investigators allege the encounters occurred last fall, always in the defendant's classroom.
Ramirez allegedly told the youth, whose identity has not been released, that he reminded her of actor Taylor Lautner from the "Twilight" film saga. The ninth-grade English teacher was reportedly having marital problems at the time.
The Hemet Unified School District has not released any statements regarding her employment status.
