Warrior softball wins Consolation Championship of Warhawk-Friars Classic for second straight year

FALLBROOK - The 2012 Varsity Warriors softball team captured the Consolation Championship of the Warhawk-Friars Classic for the second straight year.

Going undefeated in pool play with victories over Our Lady of Peace, two-time defending Div. 4 CIF Champions Chula Vista Mater Dei, Valley Center, and La Jolla High, the Lady Warriors placed first in their pool and earned a spot in the semi-final game against Del Norte (18-2). The Warriors gave up a run in the first, but held the Knighthawks in check, while scoring two runs of their own off of University of Davis bound pitcher Dana Cruse, in the top of the sixth inning. Del Norte answered right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game however, then pushed across the winning run with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

The loss set up the Consolation Championship against Helix High School. The Warriors wasted no time in this game as they scored five runs in the first inning on five hits, including a three-run homerun by Kaylie Drew, her fourth of the year.

Fallbrook put up two more runs in the second inning and added four more in the third. The contest was shortened to four innings because of the “mercy rule” with the Warriors earning their 16th win of the season by a score of 11-1.

Kaylie Drew was selected as the team’s MVP for the tournament, going 11-20 with four doubles, two homeruns, 10 runs scored, and 14 runs batted in.
