If only cars could talk

If cars could talk, what would they say about their owners, their escapades, and the social culture of the point in time they represent? Would some be dignified and stand on ceremony? Could it be expected that some might be energetic and/or playful? Would others be bold and racy? If they could speak, over 300 cars would have had their individual tales to tell at the 47th annual Fallbrook Vintage Car Show held Sunday, May 27 on the grass field at Potter Jr. High School.

Approximately 8,000 people viewed these beautiful, classic, and vintage vehicles that participated in the event sponsored by the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club, a region of the AACA. The show featured 22 categories for competition.

This year’s car show chairperson, Dave Bergeson had the help of approximately fifteen fellow club members in producing the event. Numerous other members lent their help by arriving in the early morning hours of the show day to help facilitate set-up.

The organization presents the show, which features free admission, and donates proceeds from vehicle entry fees to numerous worthy causes and projects within the community.

The event featured several local food vendors, a souvenir stand, a Car Corral where vintage vehicles were offered for sale, and booths where businesses could offer goods for sale.

Last year was the first time the club had selected a featured car for the show and it was the Woodie. This year, the featured car was the Cadillac Eldorado.

“[The Eldorado] was an iconic and highly desirable Cadillac model manufactured by General Motors from 1953 to 2002,” said Ed Vivanco, media relations chairman. “The name Eldorado was proposed for one of these special show cars built in 1952 to mark Cadillac’s Golden Anniversary that year. The El Dorado name was a result of an in-house contest, and it was won and named by a secretary in the merchandising department of Cadillac, and it’s meaning in Spanish is “gilded one” or “golden one.”

When this year’s car show opened, 14 fully restored “golden ones” were ready to be admired.

“By 9:30 a.m., the Eldorados sparkled in the sun and the judges scurried around handicapping the various classes and the car owners,” said Vivanco. “And as always, the judges very much enjoyed the event.”

Music at the event revolved around the 50s and 60s, “to set the stage for the show,” said Vivanco. “Both breakfast and lunch was provided by the Fallbrook Firefighters Association and other vendors had treats available for sale.”

The event concluded with the awarding of trophies in each category, which were each accompanied by a box of locally grown avocados.

Once again the Fallbrook Vintage Car Club pulled off a stunner of a show and all for the benefit of the community.

“The show went very well and the club received many kudos from attendees that took the time to give us very positive feedback,” said Vivanco. “This is an important civic event for Fallbrook. The net proceeds from this show allow the car club to continue to support local charities throughout the year.”
