FALLBROOK – For 24 hours, the community of Fallbrook will begin to fight back against cancer when the Relay For Life event starts at 9 a.m. on June 9 and ends at 8 a.m. on June 10. The event will take place at Potter Jr. High School, 1743 Reche Rd.
“Family, friends, public officials, marines, sailors, coworkers – everyone comes together in the community,” said Christy Best, this year’s event chair. “Fallbrook’s Honorary Mayor, Lila MacDonald, will be speaking during the opening ceremonies along with local cancer survivor, Margaret Leonelli followed by a Marine Corps Color Guard from Camp Pendleton leading the survivor walk.”
“There will be live entertainment, booths, a kids’ zone, bouncy house, an Italian ice vendor, and DJ Murphy, owner of All American Entertainment,” added Best. “It will be nonstop fun for everyone throughout the day and night. This is a free event that is open to the public so we encourage everyone to join us.”
An added bonus to this year’s event will be the San Diego Al Bahr Shriner’s clowns and the San Diego Al Bahr Tin Lizzies. The clowns will be accompanied by their calliope with a bubble machine on top and children will be able to climb on the calliope. The Shriner’s with the Tin Lizzies will bring their little cars so children can ride with them as they circle the track.
“We will have a special survivor continental breakfast on Saturday,” said Rose Peralta, cancer survivor chair. “Anyone who is a survivor can come. All of the survivors get a purple shirt signifying and celebrating their survival and they’ll walk on the track together, just the survivors. Then at night we have a luminary ceremony where we line the track with bags with candles in them, each in honor of someone that is a survivor or someone that has been lost, and then everyone walks the track in silence.”
“This is about remembering, fighting back through education, awareness about early detection, and prevention too,” said Vanessa Anderson, team chair. “People receive information to take with them. It’s 24 hours full of entertainment and activities. We have a birthday theme this year, so are planning a lot of birthday type games and activities. We want everyone just to come see what we’re up to, maybe listen to some music.”
