AAUW installs new officers

FALLBROOK – There were many smiles and cheers as out-going co-president Laurenn Baker enumerated the many accomplishments that the Fallbrook Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) made during the past year during a recent luncheon. She proudly spoke of the funds raised for local scholarships through the Country Garden Tour of Fallbrook, the mahjong tournaments, international cookbook sales, a holiday Red Sock event and a fund raising cruise taken by members and friends.

Approximately $10,000 was raised through these offerings, and went to local educational programs and scholarships. Also, through the association’s efforts, four seventh grade girls will attend a math science camp, TechTrek, at the University of California at San Diego for one week. Another feather in its cap was the Speech Trek, a speech competition, that sent graduating senior Daisy Figueroa from Fallbrook High to the California AAUW State Convention where she placed third to win $500.

The branch continued its association with the AVID program mentoring girls and providing social and cultural programs. In conjunction with the Fallbrook Union Elementary School District, AAUW once again presented its Math Science Breakfast honoring eighth grade girls who showed talent and promise in math and science. The event featured women whose careers reflect fields that are math and science based.

Elva Volbrecht, a member from the Carlsbad, Vista, and Oceanside branch and area Director of AAUW installed the new officers for the year 2012-13.

AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. The membership is open to all who have earned an associate degree or higher from a recognized college or university.
