Pickleball at the community center begins July 17

FALLBROOK – The Fallbrook Community Center tennis courts will be reserved and set up for pickleball play on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 8 p.m., starting July 17. Anyone 13 years and older is invited to try this lively, fun and social sport that is catching on across the nation. Basic instruction will be provided by nationally ranked USA pickleball players and ambassadors Bev and Bob Youngren. Nets will be set up and loaner paddles and balls provided. There will be a $2 fee per person to cover equipment and court use.

Pickleball is a growing sport with a funny name that is enjoyed by youth, adults and seniors. The sport is played on a court with a net much like a small tennis court. Four Pickleball courts will fit in the space of a single tennis court. Pickleball players use paddle to hit a whiffle-ball back and forth across the net. Either singles or doubles can play. The first side to reach 11 points wins.

Pickleball is enjoyed by players of all fitness levels. The small size of the court requires much less movement, starting and stopping than tennis and is easier on the joints. Lobbing, overhead slams, drive shots and volley exchanges at the net make for a quick and exciting game. Tactics, shot placement and patience are much more important than sheer strength.

Advance registration and sign up is not required. Tennis shoes, warm ups or shorts and t-shirts are the preferred dress for players. For more information on pickleball, contact the Fallbrook Community Center at (760) 728-1671.
