County Officials: Leaving Children in Hot Cars Can Be Deadly

RIVERSIDE - Leaving children in cars during the summer months is dangerous and can result in death, county health officials reminded residents today ahead of the start of Purple Ribbon Month, which is observed every August in memory of youngsters who died after being left alone in vehicles.

The Corona-based nonprofit ''4 R Kids Sake'' asks motorists to fly purple ribbons as part of the monthlong observation, initiated following the 2000 death of 6-month-old Kaitlyn Russell, a Corona tot who expired while locked in a hot van.
