Former Padre Adrian Gonzalez obtained by Dodgers in record-setting trade with Boston

SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego Padres first baseman and San Diego native Adrian Gonzalez was among four players obtained today by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a nine-player trade with the Boston Red Sox.

Gonzalez hit a three-run home run in his first at bat in a game against the Miami Marlins at Dodger Stadium tonight. Gonzalez is the sixth player in Los Angeles Dodger history to hit a home run in his first at bat with the team.

In the largest trade in Los Angeles Dodger history, the team also acquired outfielder Carl Crawford, like Gonzalez a four-time all-star, pitcher Josh Beckett, the Most Valuable Player of the 2003 World Series, infielder Nick Punto and an undisclosed amount of money from the Red Sox.

The Los Angeles Times reported the amount was $11.7 million.

The Dodgers sent first baseman James Loney, infielder Ivan De Jesus and pitcher Allen Webster, both minor leaguers, and two players to be named to Boston.

''We continue to try to do everything in our power to strengthen our team for the stretch drive in an effort to reach the postseason,'' Dodger general manager Ned Colletti said.

''This trade today exemplifies ownership's commitment to making the team as good as possible not only for 2012, but for many seasons to come.''

Crawford has led Major League Baseball in triples four times in his 11 seasons. He was limited to 31 games this season because of wrist and elbow injuries and underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery Thursday.

Beckett has a 130-92 lifetime record with a 3.93 earned run average in 12 major league seasons, but is 5-11 with a 5.23 ERA this season. He is scheduled to make his Dodger debut Monday at Colorado.

Punto hit .200 with one home run and 65 RBI in 65 games with Boston this season.

Gonzalez hit .559 in his final two seasons at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista, including .645 in 200, his senior year, and was the first overall choice in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft in 2000.

Gonzalez played for the Padres from 2006-2010 and was the team's MVP in four of his five seasons.

Gonzalez has hit 30 or more home runs and driven in 100 or more runs four times in his career. He hit a career-high .338 last season and hit .300 with 15 home runs and 86 runs batted in in 123 games with the Red Sox this season.
