GREEN ACRES - An 87-year-old Homeland resident died of injuries he suffered in a head-on collision on Highway 74 in Green Acres, the California Highway Patrol reported today.
The motorist, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 2005 Buick when, inexplicably, he pulled into the path of a Chevrolet van headed east on Highway 74, CHP Officer Donovan Walker said.
The impact of the collision left the elderly man trapped inside his car as firefighters used a hydraulic device to get him out, the Riverside County Fire Department reported.
The man was transported to Riverside County Medical Center, where he died several hours after the crash, which was reported at 3:06 p.m. Sunday. The van driver declined medical treatment, Walker said.
