Girls soccer finishes season with 5-15-2 record

Fallbrook High School’s girls soccer team finished the 2012-13 season with a 5-15-2 overall record, including a figure of 0-10 in Avocado West League play.

“A bit disappointing on our record,” said Fallbrook coach Miguel Trejo.

Fallbrook won the Oceanside Southern California Classic tournament Dec. 27-29 and ended that tournament with a 4-4-2 record. The Warriors lost a Jan. 9 non-league game to Mount Carmel before defeating Orange Glen in the Jan. 11 match which preceded league competition.

“A lot of the girls were injured,” Trejo said. “That was the one aspect I really wanted to avoid.”

On Jan. 24, the Warriors were tied 1-1 with El Camino at halftime before the Wildcats scored both goals in the second half. “A lot of those girls stepped it up and proved to each other, proved to themselves that they’re willing to give it their best, give it their all out on the field,” Trejo said.

Last year, the Warriors were in the Avocado East League. Fallbrook’s 2012-13 Avocado West League opponents also included Carlsbad, La Costa Canyon, Rancho Buena Vista, and Vista. “It was a higher level of competition,” Trejo said.

“It was an extremely tough league that we were in this year,” Trejo said. “Now we have a taste for what kind of competition we’ll be facing.”

The season highlights included not only winning the Oceanside Southern California Classic tournament but also success with set plays the Warriors had practiced. “The girls really implemented them, implemented those tactics and used the technique I wanted them to,” Trejo said.

“As a team we grew, we bonded, we came together,” Trejo said. “We had many success moments.”

Ten of Fallbrook’s players are seniors and will not return for the 2013-14 season. “The rest of the team can definitely step it up, use the season that we just played, use that as a stepping stone,” Trejo said.

The varsity roster also included freshman, sophomores, and juniors. “The talent was remarkable,” Trejo said.

This was Trejo’s first season as Fallbrook’s coach. “I loved it,” he said.

Trejo spent the 2010-11 high school soccer season as the boys assistant coach and was the boys junior varsity head coach for 2011-12. Trejo has also coached the Villa club’s boys under-13 and under-16 teams, and he had two previous seasons as a track and field assistant coach for the high school’s short distance and relay runners. Trejo made his debut not only as a high school varsity coach but also as a coach of a girls’ soccer team and admitted to being nervous at the beginning.

“Those girls played their hearts out,” Trejo said. “They improved a lot.”

Although the team was no longer an official entity after the season, the players have maintained their relationships with each other. “They miss each other on the field,” Trejo said. “That just shows how much we’ve progressed since tryouts.”
