La Costa Canyon has been obstacle to Warrior golfers

Fallbrook High School’s boys golf team entered spring break with a 4-2 overall season record and an Avocado West League record of 0-2 with both losses being to La Costa Canyon.

Fallbrook’s final match prior to spring break was a 200-224 road loss to the Mavericks on March 27. On March 13, a match at Fallbrook’s home Pala Mesa course was a three-way competition involving the Warriors, La Costa Canyon, and San Pasqual. La Costa Canyon shot 186, Fallbrook’s scored golfers took 233 strokes, and San Pasqual had a score of 238.

“To shoot 186 was really good for them,” said Fallbrook coach Steve Jorde. “That’s a really good score at our course.”

Regular-season high school golf matches consist of six golfers from each team playing nine holes; the highest score from each team is discarded while the totals of the other five players are added to determine the team score.

The three-way meet counted as a non-league match between Fallbrook and San Pasqual and thus as a win over the Golden Eagles. Fallbrook also defeated San Pasqual by a 225-227 score on the Eagle Crest course San Pasqual uses for home matches.

The Warriors began their 2013 season March 12 with a win over Mission Vista at Pala Mesa. Fallbrook also hosted Escondido on March 21 and took a 214-241 win over the Cougars.

The Warriors also participated in a two-Monday tournament March 18 and March 25 at Eagle Crest. Fallbrook placed sixth among the 18 teams. “I thought that was a really good showing for the young kids,” Jorde said.

Six of Fallbrook’s eight varsity golfers in 2012 were seniors while Braeden Koran and Jack Alperstein were juniors. Koran played regularly in 2012 while Alperstein saw limited action. This year’s team consists of seniors Koran, Alperstein, Kenny Pilbin, and Zach Handly, junior Michael Edgar, sophomores Nathan Potraz, Ian Mackenzie, and Parker Roberson, and freshmen Bobby Sneller and Patrick Milton. “We’re really young,” Jorde said.

“They’re just 10 great kids,” Jorde said of his team.

“We already can tell that they’re getting better each week,” Jorde said. “We think they’re going to be really good by the end of the year.”
