FALLBROOK - On Saturday, April 27, the greater Fallbrook community came together to conduct the largest food drive ever for the Fallbrook Food Pantry. It was called Helping Hands and many hands came together to help make it a huge success. There were churches, organizations, stores, theaters, schools, and school teams making this a true community function.
Many churches were involved with all aspects - from drop-off boxes to e-mails - encouraging their patrons to participate far and above what they normally do.
Five local food markets also allowed organizers to put volunteers outside their doors to ask folks going in to buy something extra for the Fallbrook Food Pantry.
The Sheriff’s Fallbrook substation had a drop-off box, as did many schools in the area. The Fallbrook Rotary Club went door-to-door asking for donations. The Fallbrook High School Warrior football players and cheerleaders came out in force to help with the Helping Hands food drive.
McDaniel Fruit Company loaned Helping Hands fruit bins that were used to transport donated food items from drop-off points to the Fallbrook Food Pantry.
The Digiplex Theater is continuing the food drive until May 10. Theater representatives will provide a medium-sized popcorn for every 10 cans or 10 packages of dry food a person brings to the theater as a donation.
The Helping Hands food drive resulted in ten tons of food for the Fallbrook Food Pantry.
