Boys lacrosse team gives Mudie first two varsity coaching wins

Not only did Fallbrook High School’s boys lacrosse team give coach Chas Mudie his first varsity coaching win, but the Warriors extended their winning streak to two.

The Warriors preceded spring break with a 12-6 home win March 29 over Foothills Christian and returned to action April 9 with a 13-12 home victory over Temecula Valley.

Mudie made his varsity coaching debut March 1 with a 15-10 loss to Canyon Crest. The Warriors lost their first nine games of the season before the successful match against Foothills Christian.

Fallbrook senior Scott Vancil scored five goals against the Knights and also had one assist while collecting 11 ground balls. “Scotty was the big gun that night,” Mudie said.

“It was good. Got the kids on the right foot,” Mudie said of Fallbrook’s first win. “It really did set the tone, I think.”

The game against Temecula Valley saw the Golden Bears tie the score at 12 goals apiece with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Fallbrook sophomore Cort Mangio responded with what would be the game-winning goal. “We just held them off for two minutes,” Mudie said.

The goal was Mangio’s second of the game; he added an assist and six ground balls. Austin Jenkin had five goals, four assists, and four ground balls in the senior’s first game back since missing three games after breaking his thumb.

Vancil and Jenkin have been playing together since the seventh grade. “They just have a chemistry between the two of them that’s unreal,” Mudie said.
