Inmate dies after fistfight with other inmate

MURRIETA - A detainee at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta died after a fistfight and a homicide case was being conducted today by the Riverside County sheriff's office.

Staff were alerted at 12:35 p.m. Friday about the inmate, identified by the coroner's office as Julio Negrete, 35, of Quail Valley. He was found unconscious and unresponsive inside his cell.

Authorities learned Negrete had been knocked out during a fight with another detainee, Riverside County sheriff's Lt. Joe Borja said. Efforts to revive Negrete failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
