SAN DIEGO – On August 11, Fallbrook VFW Post 1924 representative Andrew Genninger, a Marine veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, attended an event at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park which paid tribute to the legacy of World War II Americans. Guest speaker Nathan Fletcher, a former member of the California State Legislature, was the moving force in establishing August 14 as ‘The Spirit of ‘45 National Day of Remembrance,’ which has now become a nationwide event.
When asked about Fletcher’s speech at the event, Genninger said, “Nathan’s speech, in praise of World War II veterans, brought many to their feet and tears to many eyes, as he recounted many instances of his associations with the men and women of ‘the greatest generation,’ by remembering their courage, shared sacrifice, ‘can do’ attitude, sense of national unity and commitment to service. He said we can renew the same spirit of national unity that we need to meet the challenges of today and follow their example of helping to assure a better future for our children and their children’s children.”
The World War II festivities were carried over to August 14 at the “Kiss Sculpture” adjacent to the USS Midway Museum and the Bob Hope Memorial Park.
