Guac Girls 1-2-2 in Cal Cup

Fallbrook High School’s off-season field hockey team, the Guac Girls, played in the Cal Cup tournament Memorial Day weekend and finished with a 1-2-2 record.

“The girls played hard,” said Guac Girls manager Kathy Waite. “I was very pleased.”

The tournament was played at Moorpark Community College. Waite has used the tournament as an opportunity for the following CIF season’s team to practice together and did not have any graduating seniors. Many clubs had seniors, although some other off-season high school teams focused on future CIF players. “For many of the schools the Cal Cup is the beginning of the team for the fall season,” Waite said.

That wasn’t the case in the Guac Girls’ pool. “Everyone else had seniors,” Waite said.

The Guac Girls’ first May 25 game was a 2-1 loss to the Glendora Strokes. “They played pretty strong against Glendora,” Waite said.

The Fallbrook squad’s other May 25 game resulted in the Guac Girls’ only other loss of the tournament, a 1-0 SD Hot Stix victory.

Both May 26 games ended in 1-1 ties. The Guac Girls first faced Victorious Secret and then matched up with the San Jose Fly.

Not only did the Fly have seniors, but five of those had signed letters of intent to play at NCAA Division I colleges. “We had an excellent game with the San Jose team,” Waite said.

The Guac Girls’ final game was a 2-0 victory May 27 against Coyote.

Waite noted that the primary purpose of the Cal Cup was to prepare the team for the CIF season rather than a pool championship. “It just got us ready,” Waite said.
