Quilts show a treasure of talent

More than 100 members of the Fallbrook Quilt Guild contributed to its biennial “Quilted Treasures” quilt show which took place Nov. 8 and 9 at Sonrise Christian Fellowship Church (formerly Fallbrook Presbyterian). More than 200 colorful quilts were on display to inspire, delight and amaze visitors. White gloves were available for those who wanted to examine the quilts up close to see how they were made.

Themes and subjects ranged from the holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas) to seasons (summer flip-flops, fall leaves, winter scenes, spring flowers) and California Missions to Southwestern objects. The display also included the National Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial Quilt Project San Diego County quilt made by members of the Fallbrook Quilt Guild last year to honor service men and women, from the whole county, who died serving their country.

Some kind of demonstration is always part of the show, so they had a member showing how to do appliqué – fabric shapes are cut out, glued to a quilt square, and then sewn on. The demonstration was in the same room as the history group’s display. This group, consisting of about 20 guild members, makes quilts using patterns from a specific time period, to be displayed at the quilt show. The Civil War was the chosen era this time.

Besides the displays, the show included a textile boutique, country store/quilters flea market, food booth, vendors and a live auction each day. Members donated a total of 76 items to be auctioned off which stimulated some spirited bidding and brought in a good amount of money for the guild’s charitable projects.

The guild members meet the first Thursday of the month at the Fallbrook Community Center and have a workshop on the Saturday following their meeting, at the Fallbrook Senior Center.
