BONSALL – Look for the Calizona Appaloosa Horse Club (Calizona ApHC) in the 2014 Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1, 2014 (Entry 68). Calizona was one of only 16 equestrian groups selected to ride in the upcoming Rose Parade and they will also appear in the Tournament’s Equestfest on Dec. 29 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.
Besides the Rose Parade, the group was also invited to participate in the 2013 Hollywood Christmas Parade, a long standing event held the Sunday after Thanksgiving and this year on Dec. 1.
The group of 12 colorful Appaloosa horses and riders will appear in traditional American Indian trappings and regalia that honors the native celebration of the horse parade, where horses were dressed in the most elaborate and finely beaded trappings to honor them. This is Calizona’s third appearance in the Rose Parade/Equestfest and their first appearance in the Hollywood Christmas Parade.
Longtime, local Bonsall resident Debbie Herzman will be riding once again with Calizona as they make their way down the parade routes on her horse, Ochoco Nikki. Nik was the Appaloosa Horse Club Museum’s raffle horse in 2011 that Debbie happened to win.
A 1,200 mile journey from Moscow, Idaho brought Nik to his current home in Bonsall. Herzman, an enthusiast of Native American history and Appaloosa heritage, is the primary costumer of the group loaning many of her hand crafted and beaded outfits to riders in the Calizona ApHC group.
Keep an eye out for Herzman as she rides one of the most colorful, spotted Appaloosa horses with the Calizona ApHC Equestrian group.
